Side Effects of Vitamin D

vitaminsVitamin D is important for maintaining strong bones and for the proper functioning of other systems of the body. Improper levels can lead to a number of side effects of vitamin D, which can range from rickets and osteoporosis to muscle pain and kidney failure.

Vitamins are a group of nutrients that are required by the body in small amounts. Human beings require 13 types of vitamins that are broadly classified into water-soluble and fat-soluble forms. Vitamin D is a group of fat soluble vitamins. The two major forms that are important for human beings are vitamin D2 also known as ergocalciferol and vitamin D3 which is also referred to as cholecalciferol. Together they are called the calciferols. Foods like fish, egg, cod liver oil, cheese butter milk and fortified milk are rich sources of vitamin D. Although required in small amounts, it is important to maintain proper levels of vitamin D in the body, as a deficiency or overdose may lead to side effects of vitamin D.
